What is an intimacy coordinator?
This role was created in the industry in order to facilitate easier communication
between actors that need to be intimate in any shape or form for a role. They may be
involved in choreographing intimate movements and/or acts. These acts can vary
from simple things such as holding hands or hugging to more intimate acts such as
kissing, making love, etc.
Importance
Intimacy coordinators have become vital in the industry in order to make sure
that all parties are comfortable when performing intimate acts. The ensure the
safety of actors as well by establishing clear boundaries between themselves and
advocating for their needs to higher ups in productions.
Personal Experience
Just a month ago, I had the opportunity of partaking in an intimacy rehearsal for
Mini Mirage's production of Carrie. As we had 3 casts, the actors got with their paired
partner and had time dedicated to getting to know their partner. This created a more
comfortable atmosphere among pairs before moving into exercises that would
create more physical ease between the actors. As the rehearsal went on, the actors
got the opportunity to get consent (which could be a yes or a no) from their partners,
and practice to see if the actors would be comfortable with things such as hugging or
kissing in the show. Overall, the experience was taken very seriously and made the
overall relationship among the cast and partners much more relaxed, which created
a safe environment for the show.
Finale
I believe this work leans into drama therapy heavily and that it is very important.
For this reason, I would like to host a workshop in collaboration with Mini Mirage
where a professional intimacy coordinator has the chance to talk to students and talk
about how importance safety and consent is, among other things. Hopefully we will
be able to make this a possibility soon!
